playing at Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre at Mars Hill University. It's light on story but more than compensates with Carmichael's deep song catalog performed by an able five person cast.Written by Alan Bailey and Mark Cabaniss, "Stardust" is a worthy showcase for Carmichael's music. Some of his tunes have become enduring classics, including "Georgia on My Mind" and "Stardust."Like most "jukebox musicals," the storyline serves only to connect tunes and provide a framework for performance. Still, director Bill Gregg gets a lot of mileage out of a competent cast. The setting is 1952 in a small time Indiana supper club, where supposed Carmichael pals Tony (Stephen Ware) and Millie (Elizabeth Aiello) run a dinner show. They're assisted by their singing son Joey (Cameron Gregg) and two more singers: dependable Helen (Chelsey Gaddy) and dear dim witted Emma (Grace Williams). It's the night of the Oscars, and they're all waiting to see if Carmichael will win for best song. There's lots of audience interaction, as two couples are pulled on stage for the show and served supper "on the house." Later, dinner roles are are tossed into the house. The Carmichael tunes come one after another including "Two Sleepy People," "Heart and Soul," "Up the Lazy River," "When Love Goes Wrong," "The Monkey Song," "Rocking Chair," "Georgia on My Mind" and "Stardust," which gets stirring performance at the end. Carmichael is an unseen character, never appearing in the show, but constantly discussed throughout.Tony and Millie are planning a big summer vacation, but that all depends on turning the club over to Joey, who has something he hasn't told the folks. Millie is constantly fretting over her family, and there's a very funny Saucony London Ontario

moment involving dessert. The story has a dramatic moment toward the end.Cameron Gregg has his Saucony Shoes Jazz 1950s singing character down pat, and Williams does a funny turn as a movie loving chatterbox. The singing is solid throughout, with fine performances by Gaddy, SART regular Aiello and Ware, a veteran actor making his first SART appearance.
